To hear WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange tell it, Facebook and the U.S. government are in cahoots to build a large, far-reaching database.
In an interview with Russia Today, Assange, who's currently awaiting a July 12 hearing regarding a sexual assault charge, called Mark Zuckerberg's social network "the most appalling spy machine that has ever been invented."
According to him, Facebook is a database of names and records voluntarily maintained by its users that is accessible by U.S. intelligence organizations.
"Everyone should understand that when they add their friends to Facebook they are doing free work for the United States intelligence agencies, and building a database for then," Assange said.
He contends that while the U.S. government doesn't run any part of Facebook, it can "bring to bear legal and political pressure to them."
