David Sweat, the second escaped murderer missing from an upstate New York prison for three weeks, has been shot by a state trooper in the town of Constable, near the Canadian border, the Buffalo News reports.

Sweat was bleeding badly, and his wounds were considered "life-threatening," the paper reported.

Constable is just north of Malone, which is where Richard Matt, the other convicted murderer who escaped with Sweat, was shot three times in the head by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent on Friday.

More to come.

UPDATE, June 28, 7:27 p.m. ET:

Governor Andrew Cuomo addressed a crowd at a press conference today, saying, "The nightmare is over." He confirmed that the escaped prisoner Richard Matt is deceased and the other prisoner, David Sweat, is in custody and in stable condition.

Gov. Cuomo confirmed that a sergeant encountered and pursued Sweat after recognizing him from his description, and shot him twice in the torso. This happened about a mile and a half from the Canadian border. The sergeant was alone.

Gov. Cuomo said that two people have been arrested as accomplices, but "the investigation is not over." Anyone they find who was involved in the prisoners' escape "will be fully prosecuted," he added.

Gov. Cuomo said there will also be an investigation into how the prisoners were able to escape from this prison.

Sweat had been convicted and was serving time for killing a sheriff deputy in Broome County, said Gov. Cuomo, "in a savage, savage way."

"These were dangerous people. We could not tolerate them being on the loose," said Gov. Cuomo.

UPDATE, June 28, 10:29 p.m. ET:

CNN reports that David Sweat is in critical condition at the Albany Medical Center, according to a hospital official. Sweat is receiving medical attention from emergency, trauma, intensive care, radiology and vascular surgery specialists.

Earlier today, upon hearing that Sweat was in police custody, the convict's mother, Pamela Sweat, told Time Warner Cable News that, "We started crying because [he] wasn't killed."

UPDATE, June 29, 12:30 p.m. ET:

David Sweat has reportedly revealed the duo's initial escape plan to local authorities. According to Sweat, the original plan was for prison worker Joyce Mitchell to take the duo to Mexico. When Mitchell bailed, Sweat and Richard Matt responded with some problematic improvisation. Sweat eventually left Matt behind just five days ago, according to CNN, claiming he was "slowing him down."
