A Montclair, New Jersey property once owned by Kool & The Gang founding member Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas is back on the market for $7.5 million — a 525% jump from the $1.2 million paid for it in 2021.
According to The New York Post, the two-family residence at 82–84 Watchung Ave. spans just under half an acre and is configured as side-by-side townhouses, each with three bedrooms. Both units are also offered for rent at $18,000 per month.
Listing broker Allison Maguire of Brown Harris Stevens said the property was “restored and renovated to bring it back to its former beauty,” adding, “The work that went into the house — from the craftsmanship, to the millwork and the design choices — it’s just gorgeous.” Maguire also noted the seller is “an extended band family member.”
Thomas, an alto saxophonist, flautist, and percussionist who helped define the sound of Kool & The Gang, purchased the home in 1999 for $374,000. He passed away in his sleep at the age of 70 in 2021.
Maguire recalled his local ties, saying, “The town’s Fourth of July parade would always go by the house and people would wave to him.” Kool & The Gang — known for hits like “Celebration” and “Get Down On It” — continues to tour.
Each townhouse includes an in-home elevator serving all levels, three bedrooms, four baths and a powder room, and a heated two-car garage that the listing says could be repurposed as a studio or gym.
A double-sided gas fireplace anchors the main floor. Design features include white oak floors, custom lighting, and what the listing describes as “organic textures.” Kitchens are equipped with a 9-foot island for casual meals and flow to a sunlit dining area and a fire-lit family room.
A top-floor bedroom features a spa-style bath with radiant heat and a walk-in closet. The finished basement can serve as a guest suite, office, or additional family space. Outdoor spaces include a wraparound porch and a backyard.
Montclair remains a draw for creatives within commuting distance of Manhattan. Notable names associated with the area include Bobbi Brown and Stephen Colbert, and, according to reports, Adam Sandler has recently rented nearby while working on a Netflix project.
