Netflix is dropping a new documentary in collaboration with Higher Ground and Big Mouth Productions titled Becoming, featuring an in-depth look into the life of former FLOTUS Michelle Obama.
"I'm excited to let you know that on May 6, Netflix will release Becoming, a documentary film directed by Nadia Hallgren that looks at my life and the experiences I had while touring following the release of my memoir," Obama said in a press release on Monday. "Those months I spent traveling—meeting and connecting with people in cities across the globe—drove home the idea that what we share in common is deep and real and can't be messed with."
The First Lady added that she treasures these captured memories and "that sense of connection" more than ever at the moment due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns.
"It's hard these days to feel grounded or hopeful, but I hope that like me, you'll find joy and a bit of respite in what Nadia has made," she said.
The award-winning Nadia Hallgren is known for her previous work on critically acclaimed documentaries After Maria, Trouble the Water, and more. In a statement, she reflected on her years-long career and the efforts she went through to ensure the film felt as intimate as possible.
"I've been a documentary cinematographer for 15 years and my focus has always been the craft of cinema vérité," she said. "To make this film feel intimate I knew I had to get close. In practical terms, that can be a hard thing to do with Michelle Obama. For security reasons alone, she's flanked by Secret Service everywhere she goes. She moves quickly and I had to learn to move with her—I filmed in tight, private spaces in a way that required the smallest possible footprint, but also allowed me to build a close relationship with her."
Becoming, which shares a title with the 2018 Obama memoir in question, is out May 6 on Netflix.
