If Quentin Tarantino is to be believed, he is set to direct one more movie (which would be his tenth) before calling it quits. This will not represent an end for his creative pursuits, however, as he revealed in a convo he had with Martin Scorsese for the latest issue of DGA Quarterly that his next move (at least, at the moment) will see him writing a book.
Additionally, if you're a Tarantino film fan ,this is still notable because his latest movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, also started out as a book. So you never know what direction this might go.
As for the plot...
Tarantino gave a pretty detailed look about the subject of this book-in-waiting, which will focus on the differences between Hollywood and foreign films, and a veteran's lack of enthusiasm for the former following the end of WWII. "I’ve got this character who had been in World War II and he saw a lot of bloodshed there. And now he’s back home, and it’s like the ’50s, and he doesn’t respond to movies anymore. He finds them juvenile after everything that he’s been through. As far as he’s concerned, Hollywood movies are movies," Tarantino revealed. "And so then, all of a sudden, he starts hearing about these foreign movies by Kurosawa and Fellini. … And so he’s like, ‘Well, maybe they might have something more than this phony Hollywood stuff.'"
Tarantino further shared that he was getting into the head of his book's protagonist by watching postwar era films through the eyes of his character, which may just be an excuse to go back into dive into a bunch of old classics. As he told Scorsese: "So I’m enjoying watching them but I’m also [thinking], ‘How is he taking it? How is he looking at it?’ I always like to have a good excuse for just throwing down into a pit of cinema."
No details, even vague ones, were given out when it comes to an actual actual release date/release target date for this novel. But this idea lines up with something Tarantino had previously said several years ago, which was that he had plans to write plays and novels after he hangs up his directing.
