Harriet, written by Lemmons and Gregory Allen Howard (Remember the Titans), hits theaters Nov. 1.

Lemmons' involvement with the film, as she revealed in a Ms. Magazine interview back in March, began with what she thought was a meeting with producers about retooling Howard's script draft. Once she moved into the dual role of writing and directing, a vision for the film came into view.

"I think it’s completely an inspirational story and very inspiring for women, particularly, that this little woman in this time, who could not read or write, was able to be so heroic, and really, it's about how love can inspire us to heroism," Lemmons said at the time. "Love can be the fuel."

I’m so excited, humbled, inspired and deeply grateful to be on this journey, with such exceptionally talented people. More to come! https://t.co/0Dl7UWaJ1Z
