The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air has been off the air for over 20 years, but the classic Will Smith-starring "fish-out-of-water" story has become a cultural staple. Most recently, proof of its everlasting ubiquity came in the form of a chilling spoof that turns the beloved sitcom into a dramatic tale of survival.

On Sunday, director Morgan Cooper debuted a fan-made trailer for Bel-Air, a gritty update of the original. In the nearly 4-minute clip, we see Will being sent from Philly to Bel-Air after he was caught with a gun.

In the original, Will moved to Bel-Air after getting into a fight on a basketball court. Here, that fight ends with Will in handcuffs. While being detained, the police find a gun in his bookbag, setting into motion the chain of events that lands him on the other side of the country. The trailer also chronicles Will's struggle with meeting Uncle Phil's lofty expecations, as well as the clash between himself and his cousin Carlton. The mood does get lightened by the depiction of Will's first encounter with Jazz, and his dancing exploits with his favorite cousin Ashley.

We're not saying that we would've prefered if the original striked this dramatic tone, but we're not saying we would've hated it either.
