Given the bullshit events of 2018—or, for that matter, the past three years—it's not exactly easy to cling to hope about 2019 somehow being any better. However, we can now confirm at least one tiny sliver of light will arrive right at the top of the new year: Shia LaBeouf's loosely autobiographical Honey Boy.

The potentially profound film will screen in the Dramatic Competition category alongside 15 other narrative features at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. The latest plot details, released as part of the festival's programming announcement Wednesday, reveal that Honey Boy centers on "a child TV star and his ex-rodeo clown father" as they both "face their stormy past through time and cinema." The Sundance debut will also mark the film's world premiere.

Alma Har'el is directing from a script by LaBeouf, who also portrays his own father. The two previously collaborated on the fucking beautiful video for Sigur Rós' "Fjogur Piano" back in 2012, i.e. the same year LaBeouf turned in top-shelf performances in The Company You Keep and Lawless.

The Sundance Film Festival hits Utah Jan. 24 - Feb. 3. A more detailed schedule will be released shortly. "Society relies on storytellers," Sundance Institute founder and all-around legend Robert Redford said Wednesday. "The choices they make, and the risks they take, define our collective experience. This year's festival is full of storytellers who offer challenges, questions and entertainment. In telling their stories, they make difficult decisions in the pursuit of truth and art; culture reaps the reward."

LaBeouf is joined inHoney Boy by Lucas Hedges, Noah Jupe, and FKA Twigs (for her feature film debut). Also on the 2019 slate for LaBeouf are The Peanut Butter Falcon and The Tax Collector.
