The Upside, a remake of the 2011 French film The Intouchables, centers around the bond between Dell and Phillip. With Dell, played by Kevin Hart, running out of job options given his past as a paroled ex-convict, and Phillip, portrayed by Bryan Cranston, a billionaire quadriplegic looking for someone who can help him out, the two seemingly find each other at the perfect time. Despite their clear differences, they are able to not only work together, but they develop an unexpected relationship.

The road to the big screen has been a complicated one for The Upside. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September of 2017, and was expected to hit theaters in the United States on March 9, 2018. However, the film, which was initially being produced by The Weinstein Company, was pulled from its scheduled release date in light of the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault allegations. In August, it was announced that STX Entertainment would partnering with Lantern Entertainment, formerly known as TWC, to distribute the movie. The film is now set to be released on January 11, 2019.

When the Night School star spread the word about The Upside, he declared that his performance will "blow people away."
