True Detective season 2, with the vape talk and the Vince Vaughn-ing and whatnot, was a pretty odd follow-up to one of the greatest inaugural seasons of a TV series in recent history. However, if this glimpse at the Mahershala Ali-starring third season is any indication, HBO definitely has course correction on the brain.

"Before you ever knew me, I wasn't scared much," Ali says in the teaser trailer's opening moments, later likening his brain to "a bunch of missing pieces." The clip premiered during Sunday's broadcast of the Sharp Objects finale, coverage of which I would recommend avoiding unless you're super into spoilers.

Back in March, director Jeremy Saulnier exited the series after finishing his work on the first two episodes. The rest of the new season, per a Varietyreport, will see directing duties divided between Daniel Sackheim and series creator Nic Pizzolatto. As is TV lore by now, True Detective's inaugural season was entirely directed by Cary Fukunaga.

"I'm tremendously thrilled to be working with artists at the level of Mahershala and Jeremy," Pizzolatto said last year when announcing HBO's season 3 pickup. "I hope the material can do justice to their talents, and we're all very excited to tell this story." Carmen Ejogo, Ray Fisher, Stephen Dorff, Mammi Gummer, Rhys Wakefield, Scoot McNairy, Jon Tenney, and Michael Greyeyes will join Ali in the new cast. The new episodes begin in January.
