Here's Why Some Netflix Subscribers Are Upset Over Decision to Eliminate User-Written Reviews

Netflix will no longer let users leave reviews for its shows and movies after July. A spokesperson says the streaming platform made the decision because the function was barely used by subscribers.

Netflix subscribers won't be able to read or write reviews for their favorite (or least favorite) movies or TV shows after this month. Deadline reports the streaming platform is getting rid of the online review system by the end of July. Then, any existing reviews will be deleted indefinitely in mid-August. "This feature is only offered on the website and has seen declining usage over time," read a statement from Netflix to CNET.

This isn't the first time Netflix switched up its rating system. In 2017, it got rid of the five-star review option and replaced it with a thumbs up or thumbs down. "Netflix has had star ratings for much of our history, but we’ve learned through over a year of testing that while we’ve used stars to help you personalize your suggestions, many of our members are confused about what they do," read last year's blog post on the move. "In contrast, when people see thumbs, they know that they are used to teach the system about their tastes with the goal of finding more great content."

But the new move has left several subscribers with a sour taste in their mouth as they've begun weighing in on the choice to get rid of written reviews.

Others are just finding out about the reviewing system for the first time.

A survey recently showed Netflix ranks higher than cable and other streaming platforms as the most popular way to watch TV. This week the company announced an ultra tier which will allow customers to watch in high dynamic range (HDR) for a few dollars more.

But it seems reviews are what the people want. Check out more reactions to the news below.

Netflix suggestive algorithms are like: Because you watched [show] try...[3 shows i've already watched ON netflix and DOWNVOTED, followed by 8 netflix originals that have 1 star reviews and are completely the opposite of what I watch on netflix]. suck a dick netflix.

Of course how to promote shitty movies with J. Statham or movies with 13% on rotten as relevant to you. In the age of stupid and objective "A.I.", fake news and Idiocracy they just said: let's remove criticism. But no, I will check first and the press play stupid execs. #Netflix
