What is social media without lighthearted but hotly debated topics like the black or white dress and whether you hear Yanni or Laurel? The latest mini controversy comes courtesy of a curious Twitter user trying to figure out just what kind of sponge Spongebob Squarepants really is. Is he a sea sponge or a plain old dish sponge? As it turns out, there's some pretty strong evidence to that he could be either one.

Writer Celeste Yim started kicked things off by sharing her initial realization that the character is supposed to be a sea sponge. "I have only just discovered that Spongebob is a sea sponge? I thought he was maybe a regular sponge with an eclectic lifestyle," she tweeted, later adding that her new revelation didn't go over so well with her friends. "My friends were mocking me," she said. "I figured he's a cartoon sponge?"

Yim wasn't getting to the answers fast enough and made a poll to get opinions from other users. In addition to the results, where 72% of people who voted saw the cartoon as a dish sponge, there were some interesting takes and even some users who didn't realize he was a sponge at all, despite his name. Based on the poll results, Yim eventually comes to her own ultimate conclusion about the uproar. "The votes have been counted and the results are in," she tweeted. "Nothing but respect for my dish sponge."
