On what would have been the Notorious B.I.G.'s 46th birthday, Global Road Entertainment released the trailer for its forthcoming film City of Lies starring Johnny Depp and Forest Whitaker.
The true-crime drama is based on the unsolved investigation into Biggie’s death. Johnny Depp plays LAPD Det. Russell Poole as he attempts to work the murder case two decades later. Whitaker's reporter character “Jack” Jackson attempts to save his reputation and career by figuring out why the investigation remains open. The two men team up and uncover a seemingly endless web of corruption involving the LAPD.
The Brad Furman–directed City of Lies follows Det.Poole’s attempt to investigate the Biggie Smalls and 2Pac murders. Though he ultimately failed to find the killers, he uncovered a huge network of LAPD misconduct. The script was adapted by Christian Contreras from journalist Randall Sullivan's book LAbyrinth, which has an epic subtitle mentioning both rappers plus Suge Knight and "the origins of the Los Angeles police scandal."
City of Lies follows USA’s drama series Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G, which also tells the story of Det. Poole and aired in February. An A&E documentary titled Biggie: The Life of Notorious B.I.G was also released in March and is now streaming on Tidal.
City of Lies hits theaters on Sept. 7.
