'Black Panther' Sinks 'Titanic' to Become Third Top-Grossing Film in North America

'Black Panther' is still breaking ground after being in theaters for two months.

Black Panther is still breaking ground after being in theaters for two months. On Saturday, the Disney-Marvel film locked in another major accomplishment: It surpassed James Cameron's Titanic to become the third top-grossing title of all time at the North American box office.

The Ryan Coogler-directed movie sits behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.7 million) and Avatar ($760.5 million). Black Panther landed at a domestic total of $659.3 million on Friday and went over the $659.5 million grossed by Titanic on Saturday. These numbers have not been adjusted for inflation. Black Panther currently has a domestic total of $665.4 million.

Black Panther earned an additional $8.4 million this weekend domestically, according to Forbes.  At this rate, it would take Black Panther 11-12 weeks at best to earn the $95 million needed beat Avatar at No. 2, which is highly unlikely. Either way, it is safe to say Star Wars: The Force Awakens will continue to hold its No. 1 spot. Regardless, Black Panther holds the 11th-biggest eighth weekend ever, according to Forbes. It's also just barely behind $1.3 billion worldwide mark at $1.2999 billion, but it's still the 10th-biggest global grosser.

Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman appeared in the most recent episode of Saturday Night Live, where he brought T'Challa in for a fantastic Black Jeopardy segment. Watch it here.
