'Avengers: Infinity War' Scores Second-Largest First Day Box Office Ever

'Avengers: Infinity War' made more money in one day than most movies make over their entire opening weekend.

In what might be the least shocking news of the weekend, Avengers: Infinity War is making a boatload of money. The latest Marvel installment is estimated to have made $106 million just on Friday night. That would give Infinity War the second-best first day performance ever in the country (it's flanked by two Star Wars movies, making $2 million more than The Last Jedi and $13 million short of The Force Awakens). This comes after the movie earned $39 million on Thursday night, securing it the fourth-best preview performance in history, and days before the numbers come in for the entirety of opening weekend.

That $106 million figure is more striking than it seems. According to Box Office Mojo, there are only 42 other domestic releases that have earned more than $106 million during their entire opening weekend. That means Infinity War has made more in one day than blockbusters like Wonder Woman or The Fate of the Furious made in their entire opening weekends. (Both of those movies broke box office records at the time, too.)

Here’s another way of looking at it: as Mashable calculated, Infinity War raked in the dollars on Friday at a rate of $73.611.11 per minute.

Avengers is the second Marvel movie to be released this year, coming after Black Panther, which became the third highest-earning movie in U.S. history. These two movies have contributed to another Disney accomplishment: becoming the first studio to earn $1 billion dollars at the box office in 2018.
