“There’s an ideological civil war happening [in the black community],” Candace said at an UCLA event after Black Lives Matter protesters showed up. “Black people that are focused on their past and shouting about slavery and black people that are focused on their futures.” She went on to suggest that those who support Black Lives Matter have a “victim mentality.”
“I don’t know why people like being oppressed, it’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard,” she went on. Her disingenuous argument fails to see that all BLM supporters would agree with her on that point, but the past—especially when it is as violent, discriminatory, and racist as it is—matters when we ask ourselves why a 22-year-old father was fatally shot at by police in his grandmother’s backyard holding his cell phone. Candace’s suggestion that BLM supporters didn’t go through slavery or Jim Crow is just silly—that might be factually true of younger BLM supporters, but just because laws were repealed doesn’t mean society totally has changed.
