WAIT, WUT!? Cynthia Nixon, aka Miranda from Sex in the City, aka my ginger heroine, is running for governor of New York. I swear on every pair of Carrie’s Manolo’s this is not fake news. The native New Yorker confirmed on Monday that she will be running against incumbent Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic Primary.
Nixon isn’t just an actress, she’s also a mom of three, with a passion for public education. “I think there are a lot of people who would like me to run for a variety of reasons,” Nixon told Al Roker, Dylan Dreyer, and guest host John Cena on the Today show. “And I think that No. 1 is education.” She also called out Governor Cuomo for his claim that “we spend more per pupil [than] any other state.” While that is true, Nixon explained, “the only reason that is true is that we spend so much in our wealthiest districts. So that evens out. Between our hundred richest schools and our hundred poorest schools, there’s a $10 gap on what we spend per pupil.”
There’s also the fact that Nixon is decidedly anti-Trump. In February of last year, she joined activists at NYC’s Stonewall Inn to protest 45’s immigration ban. The Stonewall in is a historic landmark for the city’s gay community, and Nixon herself is a gay woman–she married her wife Christine Marinoni in 2012. The actress is also a vocal advocate for LGBTQ rights. So, say what you will about celebrities getting into politics, but I think it’s fair to say not every celebrity’s political prowess is created equal. So before the Twitter clapbacks start, let’s give Nixon a chance. She did play a lawyer on SATC, after all. (Kidding...kinda.)
