The Disney live-action version of Mulan, which was originally slated to hit theaters on November 2, 2018, has been pushed back nearly 17 months to March 27, 2020. That move was announced by Disney on Thursday.
The Disney animated version of the same story earned over $300 million in the summer of 1998. This newest edition was (or, I guess, still is) slated to be yet another Disney cartoon turned into a live-action film, following in the steps of 2016's The Jungle Book, 2017's Beauty and the Beast, and 2019's The Lion King. Both Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book's "real life" versions netted $1+ billion worldwide, and we'll just go ahead and guess The Lion King will do the exact same thing.
Other live action Disney remakes coming up over the next few years include: Aladdin, Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid, Dumbo and probably some other stuff.
Anyway, this 2018 2020 Mulan release will be directed by Niki Caro, and star Chinese actress Liu Yifei as the titular character. As pointed out by The Wrap, in 2017 a petition made the rounds that urged/requested/demanded that Disney cast an Asian actress for the part of Mulan to prevent the company from "whitewashing" the role.
