After wrapping up an extremely lit fourth season of Broad City, series co-star and co-creator Abbi Jacobson appears to be expanding her portfolio beyond her signature Comedy Central series. In an exclusive for The Hollywood Reporter, Lesley Goldberg reports Jacobson and Will Graham will co-write and executive produce a reboot of Penny Marshall’s 1992 film A League of Their Own for Amazon.
According to Goldberg, the Amazon series will be reimagined as a half-hour comedy “taking a contemporary spin on the stories of the women surrounding the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.”
Marshall’s original film starred Tom Hanks and Geena Davis as the manager and assistant manager of the all-female Rockford Peaches baseball team. The film also boasted a cast that featured Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell. A particular exchange between Hanks and Bitty Schram produced the now infamous “There’s no crying in baseball” line.
A synopsis from the proposed series’ log line hints at touching on various social issues as the team navigates, “close games, injuries, late night bar crawls, sexual awakenings, not crying and road trips across a rapidly changing United States.”
In 2012, The Library of Congress added A League of Their Own to the National Film Registry Listing. CBS also attempted a televised sitcom based on A League of Their Own in 1993, but the series was canceled after three episodes.
If it's given the green light, A League of Their Own will be the second major Amazon reboot following the reported $250 million adaptation of Lord of The Rings.
