J.J Abrams loves an exciting surprise. Two years ago, Abrams stunned audiences when he revealed the trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane in the middle of Super Bowl L. Tonight, he outdid himself.

Out of nowhere, a trailer for The Cloverfield Paradox was released during Super Bowl LII. The trailer starts by referencing the original film, which came out a decade ago, before providing some quick shots from the latest installment of the Cloverfield franchise. The clip ends by declaring that the film will be released tonight, after the Super Bowl.

Earlier tonight, Ava DuVernay promised that "#FilmTwitter is going to explode."

Woman of color-led, sci-fi thriller released worldwide day + date w/ big Netflix muscle for black director, his super producer + POC cast. No advance press, ads, trailer. Straight to the people. Gamechanger. Congrats to helmer #JuliusOnah + my dears JJ, Gugu, David. #Cloverfield pic.twitter.com/m186Hprhqz

With the announcement of The Cloverfield Paradox, we understood what she was talking about.

We can't parse much from the limited visuals in the trailer, but it's not like we need to wait long to see what The Cloverfield Paradox is all about. Netflix stays winning.
