And now for yet another Donald Trump story! Fear not, though, because this one falls into the “strange and therefore hilarious” category rather than the admittedly more common “strange and therefore fills me with fear about the state of the country and unmanageable existential dread” category.
On Thursday morning, Donald Trump met with an employee of insurance company Aflac, known for their duck mascot. The employee thanked Trump for his recent tax reform bill with a very appropriate gift of Aflac duck mascot socks.
That’s when, according to the New York Daily Newsand a press pool report, Trump inadvertently reminded the world of the time his wife Melania starred in a black and white, Frankenstein-inspired Aflac commercial from 2005.
“Well, your chairman I know very well, and he’s done a fantastic job. And they actually, a long time ago, hired my wife to do a big commercial,” Trump said. “You know that, right? An Aflac commercial. And I think it was a successful commercial too.”
You really should see the spot, titled “Experiment,” for yourself, but it involves a duck talking like Melania and “Mrs. Trump” quacking like a duck with “sex appeal.” Melania had only recently married Trump—in January of that year, in fact. It was her first acting role and, at the time, Melania told Adweek she was excited for what her role in the commercial could bring. “Donald is known for saying ‘You're fired’; maybe I will be known for saying ‘Aflac,’” she said.

Trump’s relationship with his wife has been the subject of fiery rumors ever since the Wall Street Journal reported that a longtime lawyer for Trump paid Stormy Daniels, a porn star, $130,000 to stay quiet about an affair she reportedly had with the President. The affair would have been while Melania was pregnant with the couple’s only child, Baron. Some reports claimed that Melania was “furious” after the Daniels reports started going viral, and she canceled a scheduled trip to Davos to accompany the President, which many saw as a slight to him. The White House has denied both Daniels’s claims and the rumor that Melania and Donald are having marital issues as a result of those claims.
