Get Out, rightfully, is up for a number of Academy Awards in March.
Jordan Peele's widely praised directorial debut ultimately bagged noms for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Picture, and Best Actor for star Daniel Kaluuya. Sadly, Lil Rel Howery—who plays Chris (Kaluuya)'s friend Rod—didn't score a Supporting Actor mention. In an interview with Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel Thursday, he revealed he also doesn't have a way into the ceremony just yet.
Asked if Get Out was technically his first film, Rel briefly explained the winding road that brought him to one of the most critically acclaimed movies in years. "Unfortunately, no," he said. "This is my first, like, feature film. But you do stand-up, you do a lot of, like, weird plays and D movies."
When Kimmel suggested Rel drop the "Lil" from his name now that he's part of a Best Picture-nominated film, he declined. "It's gonna stay that way because Lil Rel represents so much," he said. "I was a kid picked on."
As for the ceremony, Rel said he doesn't have tickets yet. "Well, I thought I was [going]," he said. "We called today looking for my ticket and they was like, 'Um, you're not in the first group.' So the first tickets they give out, I'm not on that list."
Kimmel, who presumably has some pull as this year's Oscars host, assured Rel he would get him in if those tickets don’t come through. Either way, Rel is locked in for an enviable evening, as he's already been invited to Jay Z's Oscars afterparty.
