Maldonado will play Litty in the Sony production, Deadline announced Wednesday. He'll be joined by Trevor Jackson (Grown-ish) as Youngblood Priest and Jason Mitchell (Mudbound) as Eddie. Shooting appears to be already underway on the film, which X has called a "remix" of the 1972 blaxploitation classic of the same name.
The new Superfly will be co-produced by Future, who will also be curating the official soundtrack. Additional details, including artists and a release date, have not been confirmed. In the original report announcing the project, 21 Savage was mentioned as being in early discussions to become involved "in some capacity."
X was inspired to helm the remake after watching the original and being "struck" by the relevance of its story. "The pursuit of the American Dream is eternal," X said. "Everyone's always on the hustle, because you've got to be… and Superfly is about pulling off the ultimate hustle to get out of the game."
Before we see Maldonado in Superfly, The Last O.G.—his new TBS series with Tiffany Haddish and Tracy Morgan—will drop its first episode. The Jordan Peele–created show premieres in April.
