When you think Texas, the first image that comes to mind likely isn’t surfing. But that didn’t stop Austin from releasing its inner Southern California vibe this weekend, when TNT hosted an amazing Animal Kingdom-inspired Pop-Up Beach at SXSW.
The event pulled out all the stops to transform one of America’s favorite self-proclaimed “weird” cities into the show’s Cody Beach, CA locale. Guests got the chance to experience the larger-than-life FlowRider Surf Simulator, letting them test out their surf skills and catch a few rays while getting some tips on their board techniques from pro surfers on hand. Once they were done riding the waves, guests headed to a custom made Beer Garden for some brews, craft cocktails, and grub from the iconic Austin Mighty Cone food truck, as well as a few necessary rounds of ping-pong and cornhole.
The Pop-Up Beach also featured a sneaker bar, where footwear artist Jake Danklefs displayed some of his Animal Kingdom-inspired designs, and a live graffiti wall where street artist ELLE unveiled an installation inspired by the show’s gritty LA vibe. There were also some premium social giveaways of surfside swag, including apparel, gear, and accessories, as well as Apple Watches and GoPros. But the ultimate treat of the weekend came when Animal Kingdom cast members Shawn Hatosy, Ben Robson, and Finn Cole dropped by to hang out with guests.
