Seth Meyers, who's routinely presented some of the best (i.e. least Fallon-y) political content this election season, spent nearly 10 minutes of Wednesday's Late Night expressing his grief at the Electoral College victory given to the former host of NBC's The Apprentice. For Meyers, the results were a blow for the path of progress and will prove particularly difficult for parents to explain to their children.

"We've been talking about Donald Trump on this show for 18 months and one of the things I've tried to make clear over those 18 months is how I've been wrong about him at every turn," Meyers said, referencing his previous assessment of the President-elect's decision to run as a mere publicity stunt. Meyers is hoping that "trajectory holds," clinching to the possibility that all the things promised on the GOP campaign trail won't actually come to pass.

Meyers added that one of the most pressing tragedies currently, however, is the thought of getting so close to making history with the first woman president, only to blow it by handing it to a KKK-endorsed candidate instead. "I do really feel for the parents who had to explain this to their kids this morning, especially parents with daughters," Meyers said. "A lot of them, like me, probably thought Hillary would be our first woman president. She won't be."

But this means, according to Meyers, the first woman president is likely watching all this play out right this very moment. "That does mean that someone's daughter is out there right now who will one day have that title," he said. "And maybe you're a woman who's currently a senator, maybe you're still in college, hopefully you're not a toddler. But who knows? With the way things went last night, who knows? The fact is, we don't know who you are, but I imagine this moment will be a defining one for you. One that will make you work harder, strive farther. Whoever you are, I hope I live to see your inauguration. And I hope my mom does too."
