Movies are dope. Whether the subject matter is severely watered-down S&M or tiny yellow creatures serving despicable masters, people are willing to fork over some serious cash for damn near every type of movie imaginable. Sometimes, however, a lot of fictional people die horrible deaths on the big screen without even getting a proper funeral. This is very said. To put these existential bummers in their proper context, the good people over at Go Compare conducted a study that revealed the deadliest blockbusters ever made.

Does 83,871 sound like a big number to you? It should, as that was the final body count of James Gunn's 2014 hit Guardians of the Galaxy, starring Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana. That death haul, as reported by the Guardian, was very easily massive enough to earn Guardians of the Galaxy the No. 1 spot.

Several entries from the Lord of the Rings franchise also showed up in the top 10, a list remarkably stacked with relatively recent films that proves you don't necessarily need an R rating to kill off a ridiculous amount of people on the big screen. The study also found that movies have steadily gotten deadlier and deadlier since 1940, at which point there was only a single movie that bagged 50 or more on-screen fatalities.

Peep the full top 10 list of the deadliest blockbusters ever, which also includes that horrifically disappointing 300 sequel, below:
