Quick question: Would you stream an entire album of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson crooning some serious Disney bangers? The answer, undoubtedly, is YES. Johnson hit Instagram with a few peeks at his musical contributions to Disney's forthcoming 3D animated film Moana Monday, including a clip of Maui joining the title character (voiced by Auli'i Cravalho) for a little something called "You're Welcome."
"You're Welcome" is among the film's highly anticipated batch of original music, with Collider politely reminding us that it all comes from the minds of Hamilton creator (and recent Complex cover star) Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina, and Opetaia Foa'i. "It's an interesting hybrid because in one sense it is an old-fashioned Disney musical, but it's also an action movie with this amazing young woman at the center of it... sailing the ocean," Miranda told Good Morning America last week.
Directors Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid) explained the story of Moana, in which Johnson plays a tattooed demigod, as an intentional shift away from Disney's princess stories of the past. "We saw this as a hero's journey, a coming-of-age story, in a different tradition than the princess stories," Clements told Time in September. Musker agreed. "I don't know that any of the other princesses we've been involved with we'd describe as badass," he added.
The project is just the latest in a (very, very, VERY) long list of Johnson successes, which this year alone have already included being named the highest-paid actor on the planet and reviving the popularity of the perplexing "candy ass" insult. Moana, also starring Alan Tudyk and Nicole Scherzinger, opens Nov. 23.
