As you probably know, movies this summer were complete and utter trash. So, heading into fall movie season (which has tentatively started with the release of films like Snowden—and the first film on this list), it’s reasonable to be hesitant about the quality of what’s coming up in the next couple months. But could it really be any worse than what we watched this summer?

Probably not.

Coming out of the recent Toronto International Film Festival, there’s been huge awards buzz for films like Moonlight, Loving and La La Land—all signs that hopefully this awards season will actually have some substance to it, and most importantly, that it won’t be #OscarsSoWhite for the third straight year. On the opposite end of the spectrum, fall movies promise the return of Tom Cruise: Action Hero, a new entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, J.K. Rowling’s Twitter fever dream, and the return of a beloved alcoholic Santa. There’s really something for everyone, so we’ve crafted a list of what we’re most looking forward to this fall season. And to really get a grasp on this season’s crop of movies, we turned to one of our favorite movie critics (and tbh the best person on Twitter) Spencer Pratt, who talked film with us earlier this year at SXSW. We gave Pratt a list of 13 movies, and this is how he weighed in.
