The man who stole a wad of cash from a 93-year-old woman’s bra at a Regines clothing store has been arrested, according to the New York Post. The alleged thief is 26-year-old Broyoan Lopez.
Lopez was caught on camera stealing $600, and the Post has dubbed him “the worst person in New York.”
“I feel a little more relieved now,” said Maria Vasquez, the elderly woman, who is wheelchair-bound. “I’ve been praying they find him and thankfully, they caught him quickly.”
Vasquez was shopping for slippers when Lopez reached into her bra and stole the cash, which was in an envelope. Lopez was taken to the 25th Precinct, three blocks from the store where the alleged robbery occurred.
Lopez was silent as he was led out of the police station and into a police vehicle. A crowd of bystanders and media were present, and the Post reports one yelled, “You’re a piece of s***!”
“I hope they put him in jail,” said Vasquez, who turns 94 next month. “He is only 26, but he should not have done it. I don’t want them to kill him, but punish him so other robbers get scared and stop robbing those who are vulnerable. Whatever the law says he deserves, he should get. They need to make an example out of him so other thieves learn a lesson.”
Lopez is being held on $25,000 bail.
Vasquez’s family says not to contribute to any GoFundMe accounts for her at this time, as none is actually affiliated with her. Oh, and Vasquez added that if she wasn’t sick at the time of the robbery, she would have punched Lopez.
Lopez faces grand larceny charges.
