Back in January, Netflix announced that its extremely dark (and extremely excellent) Marvel series Jessica Jones had been renewed for a second season. While it doesn't have an official release date, we know that it'll be touching down in 2018, after the release of Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. While the script is more than likely not even written yet, Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg spoke with Esquire about what we can expect from this second season.
One of the biggest pieces of intel is that we'll get to see where Jessica's at, mentally, after dealing with Kilgrave. "People don't just heal, you don't go through that just to say, 'Oh, he got arrested, he's in jail, I'm OK now. That trauma is a huge part of who she is now." It makes sense; Jessica was already broken when we met her in the series, and through flashbacks (and the current history between the two), Kilgrave had a big effect on Jessica as a person. Now that [Ed Note: spoiler alert]he's completely out of the picture, it sounds like we'll get to see how she rebuilds her life.
"She was kind of messed up even before Kilgrave came along," Rosenberg continues, "and so in Season 2 we can explore what's possible for her moving forward." One has to imagine that it'll be hard for her to gain trust in people; so many turned out to be under Kilgrave's spell, and out to get her. That'll definitely take its toll.
Esquire mentioned that, as of August, it sounds like Rosenberg and company are halfway through writing season 2. She didn't give any hard details on what we'll see in season 2, but part of that is because whatever goes down in The Defenders will obviously play into where Jessica's at in time for her new season. "I need to know what they're doing in order to plan for season 2 of Jessica, and they need to know what we're planning on in turn. Marvel is very smart and they enjoy collaboration, so there's never one maniac trying to take ownership."
Hell, we need to know if Jessica even makes an appearance in Luke Cage (which hits Netflix on Sept. 30) before we can even understand how the squad links up in The Defenders. Whatever the case may be, if Marvel/Netflix keeps moving in the quality direction they've been in, season 2 of Jessica Jones should be even better than the first.
