Ava DuVernay, record-smashing director, writer, and all-around female icon has finally released the trailer for her widely anticipated 13-episode television drama Queen Sugar, which will air Sept. 6 on the Oprah Winfrey Network

The show is based on a 2014 novel of the same name by Natalie Baszile. It follows three siblings—Nova (Rutina Wesley), Charlotte (Dawn-Lyen Carter), and Ralph Angel Bordelon (Kofi Siriboe)—who, despite having each achieved wildly different levels of personal success, are forced to reunite and support the family's Louisiana sugarcane farm after the passing of their father. The trailer, which was released via Entertainment Weekly this morning, features a beautifully haunting score by Grammy Award-nominated composer and producer Meshell Ndegeocello.

Even better? Each of the show's 13 episodes are directed by women

DuVernay will also kick off this fall's New York Film Festival with a documentary about mass incarceration, the first time a nonfiction film has opened the festival in over 50 years.
