Quick. Check your bank account. How's it looking? Now, just for the sheer hell of it, compare your current financial standing in life to this: $3.3. billion. That's the magic number that’s earned Scarlett Johansson the title of highest-grossing actress of all time, with recent hits Captain America: Civil War and The Jungle Book boosting Johansson to the top.
The brag worthy historical moment comes thanks to Box Office Mojo's latest roundup of the highest-grossing actors actors of all time, with Johansson's position at No. 10 making her both the only woman among the coveted group and the highest-grossing actress ever:
"Johansson has perfectly and seamlessly balanced her impressive career with indie films," Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at ComScore, told the Wrap earlier this week. "Working with noted filmmakers like Luc Besson, Christopher Nolan, the Coen Brothers and Woody Allen and she tops it off by starring in major Marvel powered box office blockbusters and other popular films, most recently The Jungle Book."
Dude's right. But you already know this. You likely spent stacks of your own cash on multiple showings of Captain America: Civil War, The Jungle Book, Hail, Caesar!, and are probably even prepping to spend similar stacks of cash on the animated musical Sing later this year. That $hit adds up.
The move is a historic one for Johansson, who spoke candidly about the industry's gender pay gap to Cosmopolitan in April of this year. "I think every woman has [been underpaid]," Johansson said. "But unless I'm addressing it as a larger problem, for me to talk about my own personal experience with it feels a little obnoxious. It's part of a larger conversation about feminism in general."
