Netflix Orders 'Narcos' José Padilha's Corruption Scandal Series

After reawakening the collective obsession with Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar Netflix chose to renew its much talked about original series Narcos. It also didn't hurt that it was right around the time that other notorious drug kingpin escaped from prison. That being said Netflix is going to work again with Narcos director and executive producer José Padilha for a new original series.

Deadlinereports the original series, directed by Padilha, will follow the real-life corruption scandal being investigated in Brazil, Operation Car Wash. According toDeadline the scandal involves corruption at Brazil's Petrobras, an oil company owned by the state. Brazil's current president Dilma Rousseff was previously a Petrobras board member. Deadlinereports that just this weekend Brazilian government voted to impeach Rousseff.

Padilha explained more about the as of now untitled series—though he reportedly toldThe Wall Street Journal the working title was Jet Washsaying, "This project will follow the judicial investigators in their journey to unveil the largest corruption scheme that Brazil has ever witnessed. It was fundamental for the series to be produced in an impartial way, and I have no doubt that Netflix is the best partner for the project."

Netflix's VP of International Original Content Erik Barmack similarly spoke positively about Padilha saying in the same press release: "Netflix recognizes José Padilha's talent in turning fast-moving current events into compelling narratives and he is well placed to document this important time in Brazilian history."

Filming is set to begin this year.
