'Punky Brewster' star George Gaynes Dead at 98

He was 98.

George Gaynes ​has passed away at 98 years old. He was best known as building manager Henry Warnimont who adopts the titular character on the sitcom Punky Brewster, Varietyreports.

The actor is a familiar face to ‘80s cinefiles with memorable roles like the perpetually confused commandant in all seven Police Academy films, as well as the soap opera star with a crush on Dustin Hoffman in drag in the ‘82 comedy Tootsie.

He also appeared in a number of television shows including The Defenders, Mission: Impossible, Bonanza, Hogan’s Heroes, The Six Million Dollar Man, Hawaii Five-0 and Chicago Hope. He even ventured into daytime soap operas with guest spots on General Hospital and Search for Tomorrow. Additional film credits include The Way We Were, starring Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford, and Wag the Dog.

Gaynes made his final big screen appearance in the 2003 romantic comedy Just Married starring Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy before retiring. He is survived by his wife, actress Allyn Ann McLerie, one daughter, one granddaughter, and two great-granddaughters. In 1989, his son Matthew passed away in a car accident.
