Police are investigating a shooting that took place on the EastLink freeway near the Melba Tunnel on Wednesday afternoon.

It is believed that the incident involved a police officer who shot at a vehicle, before being run over at about 1:20pm.

A Sherriff’s Office operation in the area, which utilises numberplate recognition technology, was attempting to catch drivers with outstanding warrants for unpaid fines.

A witness explained his version of the incidents, saying a black Falcon XR6 or XR8 was stopped at the roadblock, and one policeman walked towards the driver’s side of the car. Pointing at the driver, the person behind the wheel turned his car and hit the policeman.

“At the same time the policeman drew his gun and fired into the car,” the witness said.

“The black car took off on the Eastern Freeway.”

The policeman apparently suffered leg injuries. VicRoads is advising Eastlink is closed in both directions between Springvale Rd and Canterbury Rd, but vehicles heading outbound can detour via Springvale Rd. Traffic moving inbound can detour at Canterbury Rd.
