The gunman who killed nine people during a shooting spree at Oregon’s Umpqua Community College on Thursday committed suicide after his deadly rampage. The Oregon State Police Medical Examiner determined on Saturday that the shooter, who has been identified as 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer, took his own life, The Wrap reports.

Oregon State Police are still conducting an investigation into his death, characterizing it as an “officer involved shooting.” Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said that “at least two heroic officers” exchanged gunfire with the shooter, whose name was not released by the Sheriff’s Department. “I will not give him the credit that he probably sought prior to this horrific and cowardly act,” said Hanlin at a press conference on Thursday.
