Mexican authorities discovered a cross-border drug tunnel spanning from Tijuana, Mexico, to San Diego, Calif., where they confiscated at least 10 tons of marijuana.

Authorities said the tunnel, 9 feet deep and about 2,600 feet long with approximately three-quarters of it in Tijuana, featured a rail car system and was meant to smuggle drugs from a warehouse in Tijuana to one in San Diego. The well-constructed tunnel also featured metal beams to hold the tunnel and had light.

It’s unknown which drug trafficking organization constructed the tunnel and whether or not it had been effectively used to transport drugs.

However, Mexican authorities did say through a press release about the tunnel, that they had detained 16 people on suspicion of drug trafficking. They then said they were involved with an organization that works in the Mexican state of Jalisco, presumably the Jalisco New Generation cartel.

The detainees, ages 21 to 50, were captured when authorities surprised them at the Tijuana warehouse with a search warrant. According to police, they found the drugs wrapped in 873 plastic and tape covered packages.
