Ukrainian Police Have Arrested a Political Campaigner for Dressing up like Chewbacca

The #FreeChewbacca campaign starts now.

A political campaigner took Star Wars fandom to the next level as he was arrested for illegally campaigning for the Ukraine’s Internet Party, all whilst dressed as Chewbacca.

Everyone’s favorite Wookie is no stranger to breaking the law, after all he is a space smuggler who “made the Kessel in less than 12 parsecs”. However this time it didn’t involve dodgy space goods or on-the-run princesses, instead the six-foot-plus ‘walking carpet’ was stopped whilst driving the Sith Lord and party leader, Darth Vader, to a polling station in the port city of Odessa.

Because it’s illegal in the Ukraine to be canvassing on the day of elections, authorities had no choice but to arrest Chewie.

It also turned out that he didn’t even have a valid driver’s license and resisted arrest from four Imperial Storm Troopers Ukrainian police officers. He was subsequently fined 170 hryvna  (£4.82), which he couldn’t pay because according to him “his funds are an intergalactic bank that has no branches on this planet" (an excellent excuse when you can't pay those pesky parking fines).

His smuggling buddy (and Captain of The Millennium Falcon) Han Solo unfortunately was not available for comment, probably off somewhere shooting people before they can shoot him. I guess times are hard till The Force Awakens comes out in December.

Chewbacca even appeared in court in full costume.

At this point we all need to get on the #FreeChewbacca campaign because who else is going to be Han's co-pilot in a galaxy far, far away?
