Though NASAgenerously stepped up on Monday morning to offer the greatest advertising campaign of all time for Matt Damon's forthcoming Ridley Scott venture The Martian, he quickly spoiled that good will by saying something categorically ridiculous about gay actors. As with all misguided sequels, Damon's follow-up to whitesplaining racial diversity to a black woman on the recently revived Project Greenlight is both predictable and infuriating.
For whatever reason, Damon's most recent remarks begin with a Rupert Everett reference before quickly tumbling down a flight of stairs that lead only to a never-ending series of facepalms. "At the time, I remember thinking and saying, Rupert Everett was openly gay," Damon opined to the Guardian. "[He's] more handsome than anybody, a classically trained actor. It's tough to make the argument that he didn't take a hit for being out."
Damon then doubled down on this sentiment by theorizing that everyone should shut the fuck up about sexuality in general, forever living in fear of being one's true self for reasons not entirely clear. "In terms of actors, I think you're a better actor the less people know about you period," Damon added. "And sexuality is a huge part of that. Whether you're straight or gay, people shouldn't know anything about your sexuality because that's one of the mysteries that you should be able to play."
For what it's worth (it's worth quite a bit), Damon is openly heterosexual and even mentions his wife and children within the first few paragraphs of the Guardian interview:
