James Holmes, the shooter in the Colorado movie theater massacre in 2012, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The life sentence is the default penalty because the jury could not agree on giving Holmes the death penalty.

"We the jury do not have a unanimous final sentencing verdict on this count and we the jury understand that as a result the court will impose a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole on this count," the judge read over and over, going through each of Holmes' many murder convictions.

The Denver Post reports that the jury of nine women and three men reached the decision around 2 p.m. Friday after deliberating for less than seven hours over the past two days.

Just over two weeks ago, Holmes was found guilty of all 165 charges against him, which included murder, attempted murder and possession of explosives. The attack killed 12 people and injured 70 others during a showing of The Dark Knight Rises at a theater in Aurora, Colorado.

Holmes' mother recently spoke out regarding her son's supposed schizophrenia — saying the disease "chose him, he didn't choose it."
