Jon Stewart Made His Impromptu Return to Stand-Up Last Night at The Comedy Cellar

The outgoing 'Daily Show' host self-sparked rumors of a possible full-time return to stand-up with a surprise set alongside Louis C.K.

With Jon Stewart's final day as host of international treasure The Daily Show quickly approaching, the nation's tears — recently (albeit briefly) quelled by Stewart's obvious joy at having someone like Donald "Troll Me Harder" Trump providing endless material for his proverbial victory lap — are nearing exposure. Stewart has remained quite tight-lipped regarding his post-finale plans, though many have speculated a return of some sort to his first true love — intimate stand-up comedy. In fact, Stewart hinted at such a return in an interview with Judd Apatow for his book Sick in the Head:

"I think that when I stop doing this, I will want to do stand-up. I just don't think I'll do it to the exclusion of other things, the way that we used to. The single-mindedness of it when we were younger is probably something I won't return to."

Adding a great deal of weight to such speculations, Stewart showed up at the historic Comedy Cellar in Manhattan on Wednesday to perform a seemingly impromptu set as part of a surprise double-bill with his friend and fellow comedic icon Louis C.K. Former Daily Show producer / current Nightly Show producer Rory Albanese provided a (frustratingly singular) 'gram of the legendary evening, as seen above. The Comic's Comic also grabbed a shot of Louis and Jon (presumably) discussing how they fucking own the comedy game right now:

At the end of his set, Stewart reportedly told the audience he "could do this again." Though a full-on arena tour covering every corner of American soil seems unlikely and frankly out of character for Stewart, a continued pattern of smaller club pop-ins seems likely.

Quick — someone develop a Jon Stewart Club Spotter app.
