Jay-Z and Will Smith Are Producing an HBO Miniseries About the Civil Rights Movement

The series will tell the story of Emmett Till, who was murdered in Mississippi in 1955 aged just 14, for supposedly flirting with a white girl.

Proving he’s a not a businessman, and in fact a business, man, Jay Z is getting into the TV game. And he’s teaming up with Will Smith to produce an HBO miniseries about the Civil Rights Movement.

The series will tell the story of Emmett Till, who was murdered in Mississippi in 1955 aged just 14, for supposedly flirting with a white girl. The girl’s husband and his half-brother were acquitted of the killing, despite admitting that they did it in a magazine interview. The trial is seen a vital moment in kick-starting the Civil Right Movement, and bringing national attention to the treatment of African-Americans.

Both Jay’s Rock Nation films division and Will’s Overbrook Entertainment are listed as producing the show, and they were both producers on 2014’s Annie.
