As expected, retired neurosurgeon and reputed conservative Ben Carson has announced his presidential run.
According to the Associated Press, Carson announced his campaign in his native Detroit today. The Associated Press adds that Carson will make the leap despite never having run for public office:
The former head of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins hospital has never run for public office. But he's a star among some conservatives and will try to parlay his success as an author and speaker into a competitive campaign.
He told his rally: I'm Ben Carson and I'm a candidate for president.
This comes two months after Carson revealing that he had organized an exploratory committee for a run at the White House—and his tone-deaf assertion about homosexuality.
NBC News reports that Carson told rally attendees, "It's time we take this country back."
