This should go horribly.

Since the beginning of Twitter, the only thing keeping the DM strugglers at bay was the stipulation that to send a direct message both users had to follow one another. This meant that someone like, say, Rihanna, could stay at a safe distance from the thirstiest of thirst lords, so long as she didn't follow them on Twitter. But no longer.

Starting today, Twitter users can now DM anyone, regardless of if they follow them or not. The update is an effort by Twitter to turn itself into more of a messaging service, perhaps like WhatsApp, which was recently acquired by Facebook for $19 billion.

The one saving grace is that users will have the option to choose whether or not they can receive DMs from users who they don't follow. So don't get too jacked up yet, struggle rappers—Kanye West probably won't be opting in on this update any time soon.
