'The Wire' Cast Pleads for Peace In Baltimore (UPDATED)

As the riots in the city of Baltimore rage on, following 25-year-old Freddie Gray’s death, the team from The Wire has spoken out against the violence ensuing in their home away from home. For those that don’t know, the HBO show was based in Baltimore and followed the city’s police department. Now some Wire stars and the show’s creator are asking for peace.

Andre Royo, who played Bubbles, sympathized with Baltimore residents, supporting the protests, but asked for “Discipline not destruction”:

Wendell Pierce, who played detective Bunk Moreland, said:

Wire creator, David Simon, a former Baltimore Sun reporter, criticized the riots on his website, saying that they “dishonored Gray’s memory”:

"The anger and the selfishness and the brutality of those claiming the right to violence in Freddie Gray’s name needs to cease. Here was real power and potential in the peaceful protests that spoke in Mr. Gray’s name initially, and there was real unity at his homegoing today. But this, now, in the streets, is an affront to that man’s memory and a dimunition of the absolute moral lesson that underlies his unnecessary death. If you can’t seek redress and demand reform without a brick in your hand, you risk losing this moment for all of us in Baltimore. Turn around. Go home. Please.”
