The U.S. Captiol is on lockdown this afternoon after shots were fired in front of the building. A Capitol Police spokeswoman said the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but the building and visitor center are still on lockdown while police investigate a "suspicious package," which Slate reports was his suitcase.
The spokeswoman also confirmed that the incident was a suicide; ABC News is reporting that the shooter, whose identity has not been released, had a sign taped to his hand. "There are no indications at this point of terrorism," a federal official told NBC News. No one else was hurt. Roads surrounding the Capitol building are currently closed, and the police are still trying to locate the man's car.
Update, 4:29 p.m.: The lockdown order has been lifted. It is also unclear if the shooter has actually died; the police actually said he was "neutralized" after a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
