The Will Smith con artist film "Focus" won the weekend box office, but it was one of the worst openings of Smith's career.

Will Smith probably doesn't know it, but his first movie as a leading man since 2013, Focus, won the box office this weekend, something he'd apparently been stressing about since After Earth failed.

Focus opened to $19.1 million according to the studios' Sunday morning estimates, which is respectable, but still one of the smallest debuts of Smith's career. Since 1996 (when Independence Day came out) Smith has only had three films open smaller: The Legend of Bagger Vance ($11.5 million) Ali ($14.7 million) and Seven Pounds ($14.9 million).

Focus knocked Fifty Shades of Grey out of the top spot after two weeks. That movie dropped to No. 3 with $10.9 million domestically, and is now approaching $500 million worldwide. No. 2 was Kingsman: The Secret Service, which made $11.8 million in its third week.

The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water was No. 4 and horror movie The Lazarus Effect, the only other big new release this weekend aside from Focus, opened in fifth place with $10.6 million.
