Oprah Winfrey and Selma filmmaker Ava DuVernay are developing Queen Sugar, as a series for Winfrey's OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network. DuVernay will write, direct, and produce the drama which is an adaptation of a novel of the same name, by Natalie Baszil which follows a woman who moves her teenage daughter from L.A. to her family 800-acre Louisiana sugar cane farm. Winfrey will have a recurring role, but not a starring one (perhaps similar to her small role in Selma as Annie Lee Cooper).
