The NYPD officer who shot and killed an unarmed man in the stairwell of a Brooklyn housing project last fall has been indicted, authorities say.

According to the New York Daily News, Probationary Officer Peter Liang will face unspecified charges for killing Akai Gurley in November. Liang and his partner were conducting a sweep of a stairwell in the Pink Houses when Gurley entered. That's when Liang reportedly discharged his service weapon by accident, striking the 28-year-old once in the chest.

Gurley was called a "total innocent" by NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton.

The Daily News adds that a grand jury began hearing evidence in the case back on Feb. 4. Liang is expected to turn himself in tomorrow.
