Things have been pretty mute in the Star Trek universe ever since J.J. Abrams traded-up to Star Wars. There is a director (Justin Lin), and new screenwriters (Simon Pegg and Doug Jung were hired for a script re-write). Casting has not been happening at warp speed, however. Particularly for a film that is supposed to be in theaters next summer, and that is prepping for an April start date.

But according to Film Divider, Bryan Cranston has met with producers about a villainous role for Star Trek 3—which is good because the character is described as being "Bryan Cranston-like." Details about which villain (or lifeform) that he would play are being kept secret-like.

While that information is just a rumor, Film Divider did learn that Stark Trek 3 will introduce three new female characters, including a captain of a new Federation ship, the President of the United Federation of the Planets, and the ex-wife of Bones (Karl Urban). So the response to criticism that Star Trek: Into the Darkness exposed a dick problem that wouldn't be forgotten by looking into the lens flares, is to fill the screen not with an undressing Alice Eve, but with women in positions of universal power: a captain, a president, and an ex.

Assuming the story that Pegg and Jung are writing is the same as previously announced, the third film will focus on the Enterprise's five-year deep space exploration, and it's expected that they'll make contact with more alien cultures.
